Then it wasn’t long till the High Noon Entertainment trucks, vans and people were at our shop clipping microphones on me, and we were filming away. I was nervous as could be at first, then all of a sudden it came naturally and I did ok.

Book Review: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
For these reasons, this is why I will ALWAYS prefer human-created art over AI art. I want to feel awed by the story and illustrations painstakingly built by a fellow human. Sanderson handled this topic and theme magnificently in Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and it is one of the big reasons I adore this book. The world is very much a character taking part in Yumi and Painter’s story, too. This of course plays to Sanderson’s strengths as a worldbuilder, and it fits the novel’s plot quite well. Yumi comes from a world where the ground is scorching hot, filled with floating plants avoiding the heat.
"Bookreporter Talks To" Videos & Podcasts
Yumi wants to do some planning first, and asks Design if she has a survey of the planet. Design says she does not, but she does know someone who has traveled the planet extensively. Back in Nikaro's apartment Yumi rants about the arrival of the scholars and their machine. Painter defends the idea of the machine, pointing at the precise nature of the yoki-hijo's job and the way machines have improved the lives of people in his own world. Yumi continues searching for reasons she dislikes the machine, thinking it must be part of why the spirits called out for her aid. Eventually she settles and begins to practice painting bamboo, though she feels ready to advance to something new.

Painter patrols the dark streets dreaming of being a hero - a goal that has led to nothing but heartache and isolation, leaving him always on the outside looking in. Yumi's life is spent in strict obedience, granting her the power to summon the spirits that bestow vital aid to her society—but she longs for a single day as a normal person. Painter patrols the dark streets dreaming of being a hero—which has led to heartache and isolation, leaving him always on the outside looking in. Lastly, Aliya Chen (the illustrator behind Yumi and the Nightmare Painter) deserves a standing ovation.

In the shrine, Painter receives a map of Torio from Liyun and shares some empathetic words with her, thanking her for her patience. He sketches Masaka's map over it and they confirm that their worlds overlap each other. At Yumi's urging, Painter approaches Liyun and her attendants to explain that the spirits have directed her to destroy the machine.

She is a priestess who can communicate with the spirits. Her art—stacking stones into sculpture—draws forth spirits to transform into the tools needed for the daily life of her people. In contrast, Painter lives in a chilly world of eternal night, where the inky Shroud conceals much of the planet.
They acknowledge the potential consequences but agree to help. Liyun sends Hwanji to get the bailiff, and they gather several villagers who will help them destroy the machine if the scholars stand in their way. When they reach the scholars' tent, they explain what they are there to do.
Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus Cat Magic
For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Over time, they began to see each other more clearly and grow close, eventually falling in love.

Tesuaka says some false words of encouragement, saying perhaps he will be good enough to be in the Dreamwatch one day. Hikiri guides Nikaro to the door and Hoid interjects some commentary about heroes not living up to your expectations. Painter asks about what Tesuaka said, and Hikri explains that he simply needs to be content with his job because joining the Dreamwatch is all about connections that Nikaro will never have. Yumi dreams, hearing the voices of the scholars discussing what to do with her memories. Then she awakens in her wagon, repeating the day once again. Her attendants never arrive and eventually, Liyun opens the door herself uncharacteristically disheveled.
I thoroughly enjoyed Yumi’s Sanderlanche, though it did have a little too much exposition. That exposition comes from Hoid, so it gets a half-pass here. Exposition is more fun when it’s Hoid doing the expositing, but it still feels a tad lazy.
Just as necessary to life in the city was the young man walking beneath them, although his role was quite different. He’d originally been named Nikaro by his parents—but by tradition, many nightmare painters went by their title to anyone but their fellows. The nightmare painter lingered outside his apartment building, locking his eyes on the star. He’d always found it strange, that sentry in the sky.
Within the re-created Snapshot of May 1, Davis and Chaz are the ultimate authorities. This, however, was until the father machine was activated in an attempt to replace the position, as it was perceived as more efficient. The activation was a disaster however, and nearly everyone on the planet had their souls consumed by the machine, with her being one of the only survivors.
They attract a spirit, and it begs them to stop the machine before being forcibly sucked away by the device. Yumi notices that the creations of the scholars are smaller, suggesting that the machine keeps a piece of the spirit's soul to itself, and she wonders why. Yumi awakens to a cold dark, world which she imagines to be the "place of dead spirits".
Scholars arrive in Yumi’s village that have a machine that can summon spirits. Nikaro and Yumi suspect that there is something suspicious about these scholars, and they snoop around, searching for information. Yumi and Nikaro successfully defeat the Father Machine, and though Yumi briefly dies, she comes back to life as a Cognitive Shadow. Design has willed her restaurant to Nikaro and Yumi, and receives letters from Masaka occasionally, which Hoid references to elaborate on what happened after. The planet survives the catastrophe, as society is able to adapt. The hion lines continue to be powered by the spirits, which now provide energy in response to viewer programs.

Re-released in 1995 it received worldwide acclaim, peaking at or near the top of the charts in many countries. Toward the second half of the ’90s, as American house music spread across Europe, it began morphing into unusual new forms marked by broken rhythm patterns, unconventional textures, and playful sound design. Matthew Herbert was right in the middle of it, with one foot in the UK’s exploding house scene and an ear for the minimalist antics that would soon revolutionize German dancefloors.
Mary J. Blige – Real Love
And one of the best songs of the 90s, full stop, emerged with Chaka Demus & Pliers’ anthem, “Murder She Wrote.” Elsewhere in the scene, Beres Hammond infused his style of reggae with the feel of romantic ballads. Chicago-based production/vocal outfit Fingers Inc. may only have been active for a few years in the mid-’80s, but they released some undisputed gold during that time. Easily at the top of the pile is ‘Mystery of Love’, an epic, atmospheric vocal house journey that seduces the listener but also demands some dancefloor action. Techno master Juan Atkins also made some incredible, spacey proto-house under his electrified Model 500 moniker. ‘No UFO’s’ was decidedly, defiantly different to the abundance of smoother, Chicago-style tracks of the time (1985), making its weird, robotic grooves even more alluring. Compiling, mixing, and remastering the best 90s House remixes has been a remarkable endeavor.

Not only did they find the US city’s groove in ‘Pacific State’, they also stamped on their own inventive mark, via a hyperactive bassline and a wailing saxophone hook that shouldn’t work but absolutely does. Released in 2006, when house was being drowned out by the sounds of amped-up electro, the totemic figure of Larry Heard quietly dropped this magisterial piece of vocal-acid treasure.

While music from Japan was growing in influence in the 1980s, it took a massive leap forward in the 1990s as artist such as Cornelius began finding audiences outside of the country. FISHMANS brought an incredible blend of Japanese pop music with Jamaican-inspired dub, while ORIGINAL LOVE helped establish J-pop as a force to be reckoned with. As rock was veering down a number of different paths in the 90s, metal and hard rock music continued to evolve to incorporate genres like hip-hop into heavier leaning rock. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Rage Against the Machine walked this line effortlessly.

And who could forget the ever-catchy Nomad’s “(I Wanna Give You) Devotion”? ’s “The Power” or Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body,” which is been remastered and released as a hit just recently — they each contributed to the 90s classic House music legacy. Hinged on an explosive loop of stuttering, multi-tracked vocals, this 1986 classic brought the thrill of robotic machine-funk to a wider audience after its release on seminal Chicago label Dance Mania. House music, an enduring and transformative genre, found its origins in the mid-1980s, maturing and taking firm roots by the end of the decade which evolved into what’s now considered 90s Classic House music. Britney Spears was arguably the biggest star on the planet when she first emerged, and Spice Girls were doing something similar across the pond. Madonna was still churning out hit after hit, and inspiring a new generation of stars such as Christina Aguilera. Celine Dion turned a soundtrack cut from Titanic into one of the biggest songs in the history of film music, and Backstreet Boys dominated the boy band circuit, helping to pave the way for groups like One Direction and BTS. One of Detroit techno don Kevin Saunderson’s housier, poppier moments – under his Inner City project with singer Paris Grey – also became his most well-known.

But it really took off in the ballroom scene, where the song’s insouciant riff and percussive accents were perfectly suited to voguing’s athetically extravagant dance moves. The 90s were the Golden Age of hip-hop music for many, and it’s easy to see why. Many of the greatest rap albums in the history of the genre, and many of the best albums, period, of all time, were created during that decade. The list of artists who dropped all-time albums during the 90s is pretty staggering, and it wasn’t limited to a particular coast, either. 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre were changing the sound of the West Coast, while a little duo called OutKast were proving that the South had something to say. But the East Coast, particularly New York, was the Mecca of rap in the 90s, headlined by stars like Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Gang Starr, Wu-Tang Clan, and more.
As reggae continued to grow in the United States in the 1990s, different iterations of music from Jamaica made its way stateside as well. Dub and dancehall became celebrated subgenres, and the first hints of reggaeton began to appear as well. Mr. Vegas promoted his style of dancehall music as Filthy Riddim, and Cutty Ranks equated his pre-music career as a butcher to chopping up his enemies lyrically.
Compared to the harmonic range of most of their soul-, jazz-, and gospel-tinged productions—their 1990 debut LP, in fact, came out on Motown—the 1996 single employs little more than a fistful of chords arrayed around a driving house groove. Filtered this way and that, morphing between strings, Rhodes, and synths, they move like mercury and glisten like opal; Steve Reich himself couldn’t have envisioned a more enveloping matrix of pulses. The triumvirate of punk, hardcore, and ska helped to provide an alternative to mainstream rock and metal during the 1990s. Blink-182 masterfully blended pop hooks with playful, sneering lyrics and fast punk grooves, while Sublime married their obsessions with punk and Jamaican music. Swedish hardcore band Refused helped shape the future of punk, blending hardcore rhythms with unforgettable melodies.
A bangin' 4/4 beat sampling Hamilton Bohannon’s disco hit, "Me And The Gang." The simple lyrics have made this a nostalgic icon of 90s house. Harddrive is made up of artists Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, a powerful and innovative duo championed by the label Strict Rhythm. Released in 1993, its catchy and evocative hook is sampled from Barbara Tucker's 1993 track “Beautiful People. Since the original release, the song has been remixed countless times.
Armand Van Helden's lengthy discography includes remixes for Tori Amos, Brittany Spears, Katy Perry, and Janet Jackson. One of his most iconic tracks hit the airwaves in 1999, sparking a surge of disco house tracks that dominated dance floors. The groovy four-on-the-floor beat features the rousing soulful vocals of Duane Harden. It easily tugs on the heartstrings, if it doesn't touch you, you may not be alive.

For little ones, don't forget waterproof mattress protectors, too, and dress up a new bed with our selection of fabulous children’s bedsheets and duvet covers. Consequently, selecting fabrics and textiles that are easy to clean and maintain becomes crucial. Make sure all drawers open and close easily with one hand, as you’ll always need to keep one hand on your baby. Consider your height, too, as you’ll need to be able to comfortably change your baby (a lot!). If you’re shorter than average, then an average-height crib might make it difficult to reach down and pick up your baby.
