I had just finished a sign for some Waco business owners who are friends with Chip and Joanna. Not long after, they were eating dinner together when Joanna expressed the need to have a “go-to” metal art person for signs and cut outs, etc. Over the years, we’ve been involved in some really neat metal projects.

Then, I wind up loving the project and being more excited than ones that flow and come to me instantly. Soon, Joanna and I were talking and designing together. Then it wasn’t long till the High Noon Entertainment trucks, vans and people were at our shop clipping microphones on me, and we were filming away. I was nervous as could be at first, then all of a sudden it came naturally and I did ok.

This richly tinted finish darkens slightly at the edges and catches the light in interesting ways across the visible metal grain. Over the years, we've been involved in some really neat metal projects. Our metal work ranges from family name wall badges to business signs and many ranch entrances. We've even got the chance to work on many projects for President Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush. I’ve also done work for the United States Secret Service and Texas Department of Public Safety. I am proud to be the exclusive metal artist for Four Sixes Ranch, John Wayne Enterprises, and PBR.

When he moved to west Texas in 2004, I stayed and worked really hard to make it on my own. Once a proposal and agreement have been signed, we start our project in earnest, collaborating with all team members, fellow professionals, and decision-makers. We lead the way while listening carefully to your vision for the project. Working in concert with contractors and subcontractors, we champion your vision.

With our project management expertise, collaborative spirit, and seasoned design skills, we take an overwhelming project off your shoulders. There is a 3-5 day shipping time for most of the United States. Flecked and multicolored, this textured finish creates the illusion of an aged and textured copper. With dark shadows, this finish really makes a statement in any environment. I’ll have to revamp my thoughts or maybe even do another project. Every time I’ve ever been at this point, it feels as if it just comes to me.

This rose gold finish is the perfect look if you're trying to create a classic but modern design that will work with most colors in your home. This warm neutral finish is a great option if you're looking for something with shine, class and style. Our unique metal signs are made in the USA by skilled craftsmen. The condition and treatment of the metal creates interesting imperfections and endearing characteristics that ensure you’ll never see another exactly like it. The product you receive will be completely one-of-a-kind—just like Jimmy Don himself. For several years, I was a partner with my father in the metal art business Stars Over Texas located in Crawford, Texas.

The BFA is a pre-professional degree program encompassing typography, image creation/manipulation, interaction design and 3-D design that is intended to prepare students for employment in the field of design. During the senior year, BFA Design students undertake a capstone design project and show their work in a public exhibition at the Visual Arts Center. Students in both programs have the opportunity to intern at firms such as Leo Burnett—one  of the largest advertising agencies in the world, and with clients like Procter & Gamble and Foote, Cone & Belding—a global advertising agency with clients around the world. Students have also interned at Pivot Design-an award-winning branding, marketing, and advertising agency, Pressley Johnson Design—one of the premiere design communications firms in the Midwest, and 50,000feet,Inc.—a firm that has worked with some of America’s top brands.

Students can complete a broad design degree without a concentration, or choose a concentration in Communication or Fashion. The school opened its doors in 1883 with one building, eight professors, one proctor, and 221 students. Yumi and the Nightmare Painter Interior art 17th Shard

design yumi and the nightmare painter

But his dreams are crushed when his Tier 1 Talent is rated as detrimental and no guild or group will take him. Working at a nearby inn, he meets a mysterious and powerful couple. They give him a chance to join the Path of Ascension, an empire-wide race to ascend the Tiers and become living legends.

Book Review: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson

For these reasons, this is why I will ALWAYS prefer human-created art over AI art. I want to feel awed by the story and illustrations painstakingly built by a fellow human. Sanderson handled this topic and theme magnificently in Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and it is one of the big reasons I adore this book. The world is very much a character taking part in Yumi and Painter’s story, too. This of course plays to Sanderson’s strengths as a worldbuilder, and it fits the novel’s plot quite well. Yumi comes from a world where the ground is scorching hot, filled with floating plants avoiding the heat.

"Bookreporter Talks To" Videos & Podcasts

Yumi wants to do some planning first, and asks Design if she has a survey of the planet. Design says she does not, but she does know someone who has traveled the planet extensively. Back in Nikaro's apartment Yumi rants about the arrival of the scholars and their machine. Painter defends the idea of the machine, pointing at the precise nature of the yoki-hijo's job and the way machines have improved the lives of people in his own world. Yumi continues searching for reasons she dislikes the machine, thinking it must be part of why the spirits called out for her aid. Eventually she settles and begins to practice painting bamboo, though she feels ready to advance to something new.

Painter patrols the dark streets dreaming of being a hero - a goal that has led to nothing but heartache and isolation, leaving him always on the outside looking in. Yumi's life is spent in strict obedience, granting her the power to summon the spirits that bestow vital aid to her society—but she longs for a single day as a normal person. Painter patrols the dark streets dreaming of being a hero—which has led to heartache and isolation, leaving him always on the outside looking in. Lastly, Aliya Chen (the illustrator behind Yumi and the Nightmare Painter) deserves a standing ovation.

Author

In the shrine, Painter receives a map of Torio from Liyun and shares some empathetic words with her, thanking her for her patience. He sketches Masaka's map over it and they confirm that their worlds overlap each other. At Yumi's urging, Painter approaches Liyun and her attendants to explain that the spirits have directed her to destroy the machine.

She is a priestess who can communicate with the spirits. Her art—stacking stones into sculpture—draws forth spirits to transform into the tools needed for the daily life of her people. In contrast, Painter lives in a chilly world of eternal night, where the inky Shroud conceals much of the planet.

They acknowledge the potential consequences but agree to help. Liyun sends Hwanji to get the bailiff, and they gather several villagers who will help them destroy the machine if the scholars stand in their way. When they reach the scholars' tent, they explain what they are there to do.

Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus Cat Magic

design yumi and the nightmare painter

For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Over time, they began to see each other more clearly and grow close, eventually falling in love.

Bookshelves

Tesuaka says some false words of encouragement, saying perhaps he will be good enough to be in the Dreamwatch one day. Hikiri guides Nikaro to the door and Hoid interjects some commentary about heroes not living up to your expectations. Painter asks about what Tesuaka said, and Hikri explains that he simply needs to be content with his job because joining the Dreamwatch is all about connections that Nikaro will never have. Yumi dreams, hearing the voices of the scholars discussing what to do with her memories. Then she awakens in her wagon, repeating the day once again. Her attendants never arrive and eventually, Liyun opens the door herself uncharacteristically disheveled.

I thoroughly enjoyed Yumi’s Sanderlanche, though it did have a little too much exposition. That exposition comes from Hoid, so it gets a half-pass here. Exposition is more fun when it’s Hoid doing the expositing, but it still feels a tad lazy.

Just as necessary to life in the city was the young man walking beneath them, although his role was quite different. He’d originally been named Nikaro by his parents—but by tradition, many nightmare painters went by their title to anyone but their fellows. The nightmare painter lingered outside his apartment building, locking his eyes on the star. He’d always found it strange, that sentry in the sky.

Within the re-created Snapshot of May 1, Davis and Chaz are the ultimate authorities. This, however, was until the father machine was activated in an attempt to replace the position, as it was perceived as more efficient. The activation was a disaster however, and nearly everyone on the planet had their souls consumed by the machine, with her being one of the only survivors.

They attract a spirit, and it begs them to stop the machine before being forcibly sucked away by the device. Yumi notices that the creations of the scholars are smaller, suggesting that the machine keeps a piece of the spirit's soul to itself, and she wonders why. Yumi awakens to a cold dark, world which she imagines to be the "place of dead spirits".

Scholars arrive in Yumi’s village that have a machine that can summon spirits. Nikaro and Yumi suspect that there is something suspicious about these scholars, and they snoop around, searching for information. Yumi and Nikaro successfully defeat the Father Machine, and though Yumi briefly dies, she comes back to life as a Cognitive Shadow. Design has willed her restaurant to Nikaro and Yumi, and receives letters from Masaka occasionally, which Hoid references to elaborate on what happened after. The planet survives the catastrophe, as society is able to adapt. The hion lines continue to be powered by the spirits, which now provide energy in response to viewer programs.

1990s House Hits on TIDAL

90s house music

Re-released in 1995 it received worldwide acclaim, peaking at or near the top of the charts in many countries. Toward the second half of the ’90s, as American house music spread across Europe, it began morphing into unusual new forms marked by broken rhythm patterns, unconventional textures, and playful sound design. Matthew Herbert was right in the middle of it, with one foot in the UK’s exploding house scene and an ear for the minimalist antics that would soon revolutionize German dancefloors.

Mary J. Blige – Real Love

90s house music

And one of the best songs of the 90s, full stop, emerged with Chaka Demus & Pliers’ anthem, “Murder She Wrote.” Elsewhere in the scene, Beres Hammond infused his style of reggae with the feel of romantic ballads. Chicago-based production/vocal outfit Fingers Inc. may only have been active for a few years in the mid-’80s, but they released some undisputed gold during that time. Easily at the top of the pile is ‘Mystery of Love’, an epic, atmospheric vocal house journey that seduces the listener but also demands some dancefloor action. Techno master Juan Atkins also made some incredible, spacey proto-house under his electrified Model 500 moniker. ‘No UFO’s’ was decidedly, defiantly different to the abundance of smoother, Chicago-style tracks of the time (1985), making its weird, robotic grooves even more alluring. Compiling, mixing, and remastering the best 90s House remixes has been a remarkable endeavor.

‘Throwing Copper’: How Live Fashioned A Platinum-Grade Alt.Rock Classic

Old friends like Ozzy Osbourne continued to build on his illustrious career, and hardcore acts such as Dillinger Escape Plan proved that there was room for something even more challenging. Few, if any, UK acts managed to nail the sound of Chicago house like Manchester’s 808 State. Not only did they find the US city’s groove in ‘Pacific State’, they also stamped on their own inventive mark, via a hyperactive bassline and a wailing saxophone hook that shouldn’t work but absolutely does. Released in 2006, when house was being drowned out by the sounds of amped-up electro, the totemic figure of Larry Heard quietly dropped this magisterial piece of vocal-acid treasure.

Bonnie Pink – It’s Gonna Rain

While music from Japan was growing in influence in the 1980s, it took a massive leap forward in the 1990s as artist such as Cornelius began finding audiences outside of the country. FISHMANS brought an incredible blend of Japanese pop music with Jamaican-inspired dub, while ORIGINAL LOVE helped establish J-pop as a force to be reckoned with. As rock was veering down a number of different paths in the 90s, metal and hard rock music continued to evolve to incorporate genres like hip-hop into heavier leaning rock. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Rage Against the Machine walked this line effortlessly.

Robin S.: “Show Me Love” (

And who could forget the ever-catchy Nomad’s “(I Wanna Give You) Devotion”? ’s “The Power” or Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body,” which is been remastered and released as a hit just recently — they each contributed to the 90s classic House music legacy. Hinged on an explosive loop of stuttering, multi-tracked vocals, this 1986 classic brought the thrill of robotic machine-funk to a wider audience after its release on seminal Chicago label Dance Mania. House music, an enduring and transformative genre, found its origins in the mid-1980s, maturing and taking firm roots by the end of the decade which evolved into what’s now considered 90s Classic House music. Dance music never really disappeared; instead, it began a fragmented evolution.

St. Germain: “Alabama Blues (Todd Edwards Dub Mix)” (

The ultimate break-of-dawn anthem, the combination of butt-shaking low-end acid bass and bleary-eyed synths make this more vivid than an acid flashback. Classic House music 90s didn’t just shape the era; it created legends. Beyond Frankie Knuckles, figures like Larry Levan, Steve “Silk” Hurley, and David Morales were pivotal in the genre.

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun

Britney Spears was arguably the biggest star on the planet when she first emerged, and Spice Girls were doing something similar across the pond. Madonna was still churning out hit after hit, and inspiring a new generation of stars such as Christina Aguilera. Celine Dion turned a soundtrack cut from Titanic into one of the biggest songs in the history of film music, and Backstreet Boys dominated the boy band circuit, helping to pave the way for groups like One Direction and BTS. One of Detroit techno don Kevin Saunderson’s housier, poppier moments – under his Inner City project with singer Paris Grey – also became his most well-known.

Rancid – Time Bomb

Party Favorz’s journey through these old school House music hits provides not only nostalgia but inspiration for aspiring DJs. This history keeps repeating itself, making it worth your time to explore and educate yourself. This series wouldn’t be complete without mentioning songs like Soul II Soul’s “Keep On Movin'”  and “Back 2 Life (However Do You Want Me)” or the 12″ Choice Mix of “Finally” by Ce Ce Peniston.

Everything But the Girl: “Missing (Todd Terry Remix)” (

But it really took off in the ballroom scene, where the song’s insouciant riff and percussive accents were perfectly suited to voguing’s athetically extravagant dance moves. The 90s were the Golden Age of hip-hop music for many, and it’s easy to see why. Many of the greatest rap albums in the history of the genre, and many of the best albums, period, of all time, were created during that decade. The list of artists who dropped all-time albums during the 90s is pretty staggering, and it wasn’t limited to a particular coast, either. 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre were changing the sound of the West Coast, while a little duo called OutKast were proving that the South had something to say. But the East Coast, particularly New York, was the Mecca of rap in the 90s, headlined by stars like Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Gang Starr, Wu-Tang Clan, and more.

As reggae continued to grow in the United States in the 1990s, different iterations of music from Jamaica made its way stateside as well. Dub and dancehall became celebrated subgenres, and the first hints of reggaeton began to appear as well. Mr. Vegas promoted his style of dancehall music as Filthy Riddim, and Cutty Ranks equated his pre-music career as a butcher to chopping up his enemies lyrically.

Compared to the harmonic range of most of their soul-, jazz-, and gospel-tinged productions—their 1990 debut LP, in fact, came out on Motown—the 1996 single employs little more than a fistful of chords arrayed around a driving house groove. Filtered this way and that, morphing between strings, Rhodes, and synths, they move like mercury and glisten like opal; Steve Reich himself couldn’t have envisioned a more enveloping matrix of pulses. The triumvirate of punk, hardcore, and ska helped to provide an alternative to mainstream rock and metal during the 1990s. Blink-182 masterfully blended pop hooks with playful, sneering lyrics and fast punk grooves, while Sublime married their obsessions with punk and Jamaican music. Swedish hardcore band Refused helped shape the future of punk, blending hardcore rhythms with unforgettable melodies.

A bangin' 4/4 beat sampling Hamilton Bohannon’s disco hit, "Me And The Gang." The simple lyrics have made this a nostalgic icon of 90s house. Harddrive is made up of artists Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, a powerful and innovative duo championed by the label Strict Rhythm. Released in 1993, its catchy and evocative hook is sampled from Barbara Tucker's 1993 track “Beautiful People. Since the original release, the song has been remixed countless times.

Armand Van Helden's lengthy discography includes remixes for Tori Amos, Brittany Spears, Katy Perry, and Janet Jackson. One of his most iconic tracks hit the airwaves in 1999, sparking a surge of disco house tracks that dominated dance floors. The groovy four-on-the-floor beat features the rousing soulful vocals of Duane Harden. It easily tugs on the heartstrings, if it doesn't touch you, you may not be alive.

How to Design the Perfect Nursery

The above precautions will help keep your baby safe and your nerves at bay. Knowing your design style will make it easier for you to search for more specific design ideas and products. In this chapter, I’m going to teach you how to translate your inspiration into a design style. It could be a certain pattern, pillow, rug, furniture piece, wall decal, or even a vintage toy.

Baby Room Ideas for Decorating a Charming and Functional Nursery

With 100+ acres of growing facilities, TSDGN can provide high quality plants, trees, and hedges for a fraction of the cost. Having 12 physical locations, expert landscape designers, nursery staff, and specialized tradesmen on demand make it easy for you to transform your dream landscape into reality. I chose to go with an antique dresser that my husband and I already have with a washable changing pad (no linens required). There are also plenty of “formal” changing tables new parents can choose from too. Designing a nursery involves personal preference and safety considerations.

How to Design a Baby Nursery: 6 Expert-Approved Tips

We’re going to review the most critical safety concerns when it comes to design. No matter how much we like a design element, it has to pass the safety check to make it into the final design. Here are the 9 most popular design styles to help guide your design and make it easier for you to keep things balanced and cohesive. You might like traditional furniture and bohemian decor or a mix of modern and mid-century styles.

THE BEST TIPS FOR DESIGNING A NURSERY: nursery design 101

It’s important they can have favourites on show at every age, but being able to shut the door on stuff that’s used less frequently will help keep the room more ordered. Nursery storage needs lots of forethought, whether you're thinking toy storage or clothes storage. For little ones, don't forget waterproof mattress protectors, too, and dress up a new bed with our selection of fabulous children’s bedsheets and duvet covers. Extendable beds are sized for toddlers but pull out to keep up with growth, so they’ll fit for longer. For when they're older and enjoy you reading to them, a bedside lamp that’s bright enough to avoid eyestrain is vital.

Consequently, selecting fabrics and textiles that are easy to clean and maintain becomes crucial. By choosing materials that are durable, washable, and resilient, you can ensure that the nursery maintains its neat appearance and remains a hygienic, safe environment for your baby. Spend money on a few show stopping nursery décor items when decorating the nursery such as wallpaper, window treatments and art. Having a defined color palette for the nursery will help you create a cohesive look and make decorating choices much easier.

You can always add tie-on padding, which is easier to toss in a washing machine than most glider options. You can use a standard changing station, which tends to be smaller. Make sure all drawers open and close easily with one hand, as you’ll always need to keep one hand on your baby. Consider your height, too, as you’ll need to be able to comfortably change your baby (a lot!). If you’re shorter than average, then an average-height crib might make it difficult to reach down and pick up your baby.

Yes, curved sofas are still in style more than 80 years after they first became popular. Though they've been around for far longer than that, German-American furniture designer Vladimir Kagan is known as the father of the curved couch after debuting his iconic Serpentine sofa in 1950. A well-planned nursery design successfully combines functionality with your personal aesthetic, striking a balance to create a space that is both practical and pleasing to the eye.

Houseplants can help purify the air in a room, making them especially great for nurseries. Adding a non-toxic plant to your baby’s room will help keep the air clean, and create an overall serene ambiance. Make sure your nursery furniture meets the latest U.S. safety standards that can be found with recent product recalls on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. While it’s not safe to put them in the crib, they work great on the glider, on the floor against the bookshelf, or in a teepee (naturally).

Minimalist Studio Apartment

Yes, we’re having a girl, but we don’t believe in the existence of a “girly” color. We’ll give her as many hues as we can up front and let her decide what she likes on her own. “My go-to mantra for creating new rooms or spaces in my home is to make everything a neutral color and use accent colors throughout the room,” says Marissa LaBuz, CEO of Just Simply Mom. Finally, add personal touches to the nursery, to create a nursery you'll love. Consider bringing in some family photos and a family heirloom to make the space special and meaningful. Deciding on the nursery layout is an important step when decorating a nursery.

We offer a variety of landscape services fromlandscape design, and full landscape installation to simple plantings and homegarden consultations. If you’re on the look out for more nursery designs, I recommend projectnursery.com, there are hundreds of professionally designed nurseries there for inspiration. The beautiful rug has a lovely amount of color and character, and it still layered with a soft sheepskin in front of the changing table. The simple crib is placed in front of a beautiful cloud wallpaper and accented with fun animal toys, a pretty olive tree, golden mobile, and cozy layered rugs. Layered rugs offer a cozy floor play space, and it’s all topped off with a really neat circular gold light fixture. Every nursery needs functional storage for all those diapers, wipes, ointments and changes of clothes.

Once again, if making the decor last and the budget go further is key, the more classic the design, the better. Simpler to use, wall stickers can add interest to children’s rooms, and are easy to remove when they tire of the design. There are versions available to please kids from nursery age to sophisticated teens, so don’t just consider them for little ones. Be bold in scale, either with a single image or in creating a group as they’ll tend to look lost otherwise. In the process of designing and choosing materials for your nursery, it's important to remember that babies tend to be prone to spills, accidents, and unexpected messes.

The 30 Best House Tracks of the 90s

90s house music

Despite the deeply shady business dealings, Dreamland remains one of the most iconic albums of the ’90s, even for non-house heads. This 1997 album is a masterpiece of audio collage, pulling in samples from jazz, gospel, funk and disco and threading them together into a hazy, hour-long dream sequence. Kenny Dixon Jr.—who, alongside artists like Theo Parrish and Marcellus Pittman, helped define the endearingly unpolished sound of deep house in Detroit. The album is a collection of previously released tracks from Dixon's own KDJ Records, which were then re-edited and re-issued as a long-player for Planet E Communications, the label owned by Detroit house and techno hero Carl Craig. Carl Craig's Landcruising from 1995 was certainly influential enough to be included on a best ’90s electronic albums list, though traditionalists would say it veers too far into techno territory to count on this one in particular.

New Edition – If It Isn’t Love

There are plenty of early ’90s tracks that mixed house and rave to great effect, but perhaps none more so than this impossibly energetic stomper. The manic piano stabs, rushing rhythm and commanding vocals provide a soundtrack for burning more calories than any exercise video ever did. From New Wave dance and Hi NRG to classic House music in the 90s, the genre’s influence has permeated every dance floor. This smashing 1999 release put iconic DJ and Producer Paul Johnson on the global radar. "Get Get Down" is one of those tracks that everyone has heard at least once.

It’s been a DJ favourite ever since (for everyone from Ellen Allien to Julio Bashmore) thanks to its pulsing bleeps and plaintive vocal vibes. From 1994 until the turn of the millennium, Gemini, aka Spencer Kincy, was one of the most revered figures in the second wave of Chicago house. A decade ago, when a reporter tracked him down, he was homeless and apparently struggling with mental illness, even as a fresh crop of reissues, edits, and bootlegs was boosting his popularity among a new generation of clubbers and DJs. Read Pitchfork’s list of the best songs of the 1990s here and best albums of the 1990s here, and check out our full ’90s package here. African music continued to become a power player in the worldwide ecosystem in the 1990s, with superstars like Ali Farka Toure working with legendary American polymath Ry Cooder.

Daft Punk, Homework

First Floor saw the Chicago-born, Detroit-based producer re-writing all the rules with his unkempt and unfussy approach to deep, soulful house. Much like Moodymann, Parrish weaves a vibrant tapestry of gospel and soul sound bytes—though his stuttering loops, damaged samples, and general lack of respect for musical conventions set him apart from the rest of the pack. His famously adventurous DJ sets—which extend up to eight hours—touch on a broad range of genres across four or five decades, and have given him a reputation as one of the great record diggers of our time. Danny Tenaglia never enjoyed the pop success of contemporaries like Armand Van Helden or Deee-lite, but to this day he remains one of the seminal figures in New York house music. The prolific DJ and producer began his career in Brooklyn, DJing at roller discos in the late ’70s and early ’80s and later became a resident at legendary downtown dance spots like Twilo, Tunnel, and Vinyl. You can still catch Tenaglia playing all-night sets at spots like Output in Brooklyn or Space in Ibiza.

Janet Jackson – That’s The Way Love Goes

Mr. Fingers is Larry Heard, a totemic figure in the history of Chicago house music. ”—produced alongside Robert Owens and Robert Wilson as Fingers Inc.—endures today as one of the genre's most iconic tracks, and has been remixed and reworked by countless producers who came after. Throughout various interviews, Heard has characterized himself as an instrumentalist who prefers the more organic songwriting process to computer-based composition, and his 1992 album testifies to that. While much of it is built on top of drum machines and synths, it often sounds more like fully formed R&B or soul than the stripped-back club tracks many of his contemporaries were producing at the time. The double platinum-selling debut album from the Italian group Black Box played a huge role in bringing house music to pop radio the world over. To add insult to injury, the group then hired a tall, skinny model to lip-sync in the music video for their album's second single—rather than giving camera time to the more heavy-set Wash.

‘Argus’: Wishbone Ash’s Hard Rocking Masterpiece

The Shep Pettibone remix of “Rhythm Nation” by Janet Jackson, or Shep’s House Mix of “Miss You Much” are a testament to the talent of these pioneers. Spanning from 1988 to 1991, the Ultimate 90’s House Music Classics series encapsulates this genre’s underground roots before its mainstream success. The 90s House music classics like “Finally,” by CeCe Peniston “Show Me Love,” by Robin S and “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)” by Crystal Waters owe their existence to the humble beginnings in Chicago, spreading to New York and then globally. The music doesn’t begin so much as surface, as if “Around the World” arises from some great depth, that lowpass filter cutting out the high-end without obscuring the “fundamental” signal.

But nothing better exemplifies ’90s dance music than house, whose pumping groove supplies the heartbeat of club culture. Those springy piano chords, those kaleidoscopic synth stabs, those driving beats… They just always sound great. Detroit’s Derrick May (working under the name Strings of Life here) might be a techno pioneer, but he arrived there by feeding Chicago house through a futuristic, funky shredder, epitomised by this timeless track.

90s house music

Angelique Kidjo, meanwhile, became a sensation in her home country in Benin and around the world thanks to her thrilling blend of Afropop with R&B and soul music. Elsewhere, Baaba Maal brought Senegalese folk music to a wide, adoring audience. To those who regard electronic music as being devoid of emotion, we give you this staggering 1986 masterpiece from the saintly Larry Heard (under his Mr Fingers alias).

The 10 Best House Albums of the ’90s

They, along with contemporaries like LFO and Baby Ford, put their own psychedelic spin on the stripped-back Chicago sound of the mid-’80s, leading to the birth of a distinct UK rave movement. State 90 was their first album to be distributed in the U.S. and came with a re-edited version of their breakout single, “Pacific State,” a track you may recognize from its infectious saxophone riff if nothing else. It laid the groundwork for the UK's electronic music explosion, and it inspired everyone from Björk to Aphex Twin and the Chemical Brothers. This memorable track, produced in 1991 by the Basement Boys harmoniously fuses a crispy house beat with Waters' background in Jazz. House was still very much underground when "Gypsy Woman," was released.

In recent years its joyous hooks have been sampled by modern house stalwarts Hercules and Love Affair and pop superstar Rihanna. Originally a riff on a proto-house classic, Isaac Hayes’s 1975 disco foray ‘I Can’t Turn Around’, this collaboration between turbo-lunged singer Darryl Pandy and Farley Keith blew the roof off house music at the time. It still has the distinction of being a true crossover hit that’s maintained its dancefloor appeal decades on.

In the U.S., house music had already climbed the pop charts by the late ’80s, and underground producers were signing major label contracts. There were formidable domestic movements in Belgium, France, Italy, Japan, and South Africa, each with their own sound and style. A number of electronic and electronic-leaning acts changed the course of music in the 90s. Aphex Twin brought a unique perspective that captivated hip audiences previously hesitant to listen to “electronic music.” Plenty of other acts broke through to the mainstream thanks to their pop and rock-leaning styles as well. Moby blended lush, catchy samples with hazy downtempo electronics, and Nine Inch Nails found a middle ground between electronic and acoustic instruments. Stereolab combined French pop with Krautrock to create one of the most unique sounds of the decade, and Portishead used the aesthetics of hip-hop to help introduce trip-hop.

A great candidate might go beyond the traditional disciplines of UI design and bring a great passion for prototyping, coding, 3D, animation or typography. I also look for someone who doesn’t accept the status quo of UI and wants to push it to a new paradigm or interaction, but doesn’t let their ego get in the way. I was living in San Francisco previously and I don’t want to hate on it because it’s a great city but also a very small city. LA is massive and includes a much bigger focus on art, design and community. It has so much more to offer apart from the assumed superficiality of Hollywood. Tesla’s success was the outcome of Elon Musk’s vision and the trust of the benefactors he had garnered over his approach towards innovation and sustainability.

ways Design Thinking can add value to your career

Instead of a traditional brick and mortar showroom, buying a Tesla car is simplified where one can pick and customise their car online. With Musk’s “Secret Master Plan”, he introduced Tesla’s long term plan of building cars that are affordable and family-oriented. Their goal would be to move towards a sustainable solar electric economy “without making compromises” in the quality or features of the car. A Model S and X redesign has been rumored for years, with Electrek posting allegedly leaked renders of the new interior all the way back in 2018. Musk threw cold water on the idea in 2019, though, when he tweeted “[t]here is no ‘refreshed’ Model X or Model S coming.” Tesla instead was constantly making minor improvements to both vehicles, he said.

Tesla Cybertruck owner gets quoted over $30,000 for Powershare installation

This would still take time with countries like India, as infrastructure would need to be established first to allow for the total experience of the car. Tesla’s Model X is also getting some touchups on the outside and the interior update, and there will be a version with that new powertrain, though the SUV’s refresh is not as extensive. I personally love most of the changes, but am not a fan of the new steering wheel. While I haven’t tried this specific one, the “yoke” wheel on the Model S was not that pleasant to use. I’m sure it would be fine after getting used to it, but turn signal stalks are just so convenient and familiar, and I don’t like the change to buttons. The front end changes have been well documented, but the significant overhaul of the interior is quite a lot more than expected.
